Eleanor Hartwell

Eleanor is a literary critic and former bookseller who has spent two decades reading across the territory where serious fiction, intellectual history, philosophy, and the better strands of popular non-fiction meet. The reading lists collected here are written the way a knowledgeable friend would write them — five books on a subject, with a short essay on each pick explaining what the book is, why it matters, and what to read it for. The aim is not to summarise plots or to compile bestsellers. The aim is to give a reader the five books that will move them, in the shortest available distance, from a passing interest in a subject to a serious working acquaintance with it.
